Description

Job Summary:

The District School Nurse promotes a healthy, safe school environment and provides case management and nursing care for students with health care needs in the school setting through direct nursing service, multidisciplinary team participation, and staff and student education. The District School Nurse is responsible for students ranging from ages 3 to 21 at multiple buildings.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing
  • Registered Nurse (RN) license valid in the state of Wisconsin and in good standing.
  • Current CPR/AED certification, CPR instructor certification preferred
  • Valid driver’s license plus availability of a properly insured personal vehicle for travel between school buildings throughout the day.

  • Ability to communicate effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to independently organize and manage time and resources while effectively handling stressful situations.
  • Ability to supervise and train employees and foster a cooperative work environment.
  • Compassionate nature and empathy towards students in challenging situations is required.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills are required
  • The ability to develop effective working relationships with diverse individuals at all levels is required.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to district guidelines.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct care for students with significant medical needs
  • Calculate and administer insulin doses for students with Type 1 Diabetes
  • Monitor and manage respiratory status of students requiring continuous oxygen, suctioning or capped tracheostomy
  • Accompany medically significant students on field trips and on school-provided transportation as needed
  • Perform tube feedings, catheterizations and ostomy care and delegate procedures as appropriate
  • Participate in IEP and 504 team meetings for students with acute and chronic medical and mental health conditions.
  • Provide emergency nursing services during the school day.
  • Establish and maintain medical response services by developing and maintaining individual emergency care plans, training medical response teams and providing CPR/AED certification to staff.
  • Establish and maintain a coordinated school health program following guidelines set forth in Wisconsin state statutes, regulations and school district policy.
  • Determine the delegation of healthcare procedures to paraprofessionals, the extent of their orientation, and amount and type of ongoing monitoring and supervision needed to comply with the Wisconsin Nurse Practice Act and other legal considerations.
  • Collaborate with other professionals in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating programs and other school health activities.
  • Establish working relationships with families and outside medical providers to ensure continuity of care within the school setting.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time, up to 6 hours
  • Ability to perform light physical tasks, frequently lifting up to 10 pounds without assistance in an indoor setting
  • Frequent standing, walking, and sitting; occasional stooping, kneeling, or crouching.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to move throughout the building and from building to building
  • Occasional exposure to outdoor weather conditions.

Work Environment:

  • Typical office and/or school environment
  • Primarily indoors, with occasional outdoor supervision
  • May include exposure to varying weather conditions during outdoor activities.
